I made a promise that my mother would never age alone, or in a nursing home. This was made well before her health declined. She raised me and sacrificed for me so that I could be the physician that I am today. I remember when I left home at age 17 to attend Cornell University.
I remember at the opening ceremony for the freshman class of 1985, President Frank Rhodes said that my mother would not be losing a daughter, but would be gaining a friend.
My mother and I always remembered that statement as her health declined. During the last five years of her life,it became evident to me that to honor my promise, I would need to leave full-time work as a physician. I remember the 14-hour days, preparing meals, preparing baths, changing, diapers, catching tears, when she had episodes of arthritic pain that couldn’t be eased with Tylenol, and just being present. She had a companion named Barney, who was a bichon with a gentle soul, that knew when to be still after my mother had suddenly had a fall and wouldn’t be found for hours. I made a promise that she would age in her own home and die in her own bed. I was able to keep that promise and be with her when she took her last breath. However, in fulfilling this promise, I realized that for the other daughter-caregivers who wanted to do the same, there were no financial resources to help with this level of care. With this in mind, Aging Well At Home, inc. was envisioned and started as a nonprofit for caregivers. There are 42 million caregivers and counting.
